Electric irons are a regulated product in Thailand and must comply with a Thai Industrial Standard (TIS, known locally as “มอก.”). For guest rooms, choose a model with auto shut-off, a wattage your room circuit can carry, and a soleplate that is easy to maintain. Hotel & Home Innovation supplies TISI-certified hotel irons, and our team visited the manufacturer’s factory together with the TISI team.
Do hotel irons in Thailand need TISI certification?
Yes. Electric irons are a product that Thai law requires to conform to a Thai Industrial Standard. Manufacturers and importers must hold a licence, and sellers may only sell licensed, conforming products (InfoQuest, 27 March 2025).
That makes TISI certification the minimum requirement, and never a premium feature. The useful question for a purchasing manager is whether the seller can prove that the batch being delivered is covered by a real licence.
The iron standard: old and new
| Item | TIS 366-2547 | TIS 60335 Part 2(3)-2567 |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Previous standard, withdrawn and replaced | Current standard |
| International basis | Not stated | IEC 60335-2-3:2022 |
| Scope | Electric irons, safety only | Dry and steam irons, including models with a boiler or separate water tank up to 5 litres, rated up to 250 V |
Thailand’s Cabinet approved the draft ministerial regulation in principle in March 2025, citing alignment with international standards and consumer protection. TÜV SÜD reports that the new standard took effect on 24 December 2025 (TÜV SÜD, TISI).
Certified vs uncertified: what changes for the buyer?
| Factor | TISI-certified iron with licence | Uncertified iron |
|---|---|---|
| Seller’s legal position | Lawfully imported and sold | Importer and seller are in breach of Thai law |
| Traceability | QR code can be scanned, licence copy available | Origin cannot be verified |
| Purchasing documents | Paperwork for procurement and engineering files | None |
| Supply continuity | Same model can be reordered | Risk of seizure or stock disappearing |
This is a live risk. In June 2026, Thailand’s Ministry of Industry inspected a warehouse in Samut Sakhon that was using a forged TISI licence and seized about 33,000 electrical appliances (Thai PBS). Authorities also advise buyers to check the TISI mark and QR code every time, especially when a price looks unusually low (THE STANDARD).
Behind the scenes: we went to the factory

We did not stop at choosing a product from a catalogue. The team from Hotel and Home Innovation Co., Ltd. travelled to the iron manufacturer’s factory in China, together with the TISI Thailand team, to inspect the factory’s standards and production process.
For us, distributing hotel equipment does not end when the goods clear customs and reach the customer. We care about quality from the source of production through to real use in the guest room.
The trip reflects three things about how we select products:
- Start at the source. We want to see the production process ourselves before offering a product to hotels.
- Inspect alongside the standards body. The factory inspection was carried out with the TISI team, so it was more than a supplier assessing itself.
- Stay accountable to the guest room. What we deliver to hotels, resorts and projects should be made under a controlled process with user safety in mind.
Small items shape a hotel’s standard. Guest experience does not come only from the big facilities. The kettle, the hair dryer and the iron are all part of it.
How much does auto shut-off matter in a guest room?
A great deal, because it works on the day a guest forgets. Auto shut-off cuts the heating element when the iron is left motionless, which adds a layer of safety when a guest leaves it on before heading out.
A hotel cannot control whether a guest unplugs the iron. It can choose an automatic cut-off at the purchasing stage.
How do you choose a hotel iron? A 7-point checklist
Start with the certification paperwork, then look at the specification. The checklist follows the order we use ourselves. Purchasing, housekeeping and engineering teams can put these questions to any supplier.
| # | What to check | Question for the supplier | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | TISI mark and QR code | “Can we see the mark on the actual product?” | Certified products have had to show a QR code next to the TISI mark since 21 January 2021 |
| 2 | Import licence | “Can you send a copy, and who is the licence holder?” | Confirms the seller imports lawfully under its own licence |
| 3 | Auto shut-off | “When does it cut off, flat and upright?” | Reduces risk when a guest forgets |
| 4 | Wattage and circuit | “What is the rated power?” | A 2,000 W iron draws about 9 A at 220 V, so the socket circuit needs headroom |
| 5 | Ironing modes | “Does it do dry, spray and steam?” | Covers the range of fabrics guests bring |
| 6 | Soleplate and upkeep | “What is the soleplate made of? Is there self-cleaning?” | A smooth plate and built-in descaling reduce housekeeping work |
| 7 | Supplier readiness | “Can we reorder the same model? Do you deliver to the property?” | Hotels need one model throughout and replacements on hand |
Points 1 and 2 take a few minutes to verify and screen out unprepared suppliers early (MEA via Naewna, 15 October 2025).

Frequently asked questions
How do I verify an iron’s TISI certification?
Look for the TISI mark and QR code on the product or its box, scan the code to see the certification details, and ask the seller for a copy of the import licence. The licence holder should match the importer.
What is the TIS number for electric irons?
The previous standard is TIS 366-2547. The current one is TIS 60335 Part 2(3)-2567, based on IEC 60335-2-3:2022, covering both dry and steam irons.
How does auto shut-off work on an iron?
The iron cuts its heating element when it is left motionless, and typically resumes when picked up again. The delay differs by model, so ask the supplier about both the flat and upright positions.
What wattage should a hotel iron have?
There is no fixed rule. The model we supply is rated at 2,000 W, which draws about 9 A at 220 V. Designers and contractors should confirm the guest-room socket circuit can carry it.
Should every room have an iron, or should guests borrow one from housekeeping?
It depends on the property’s positioning and guests. In-room irons are more convenient. A loan system lets staff check each unit between uses. Either way, use a TISI-certified model with auto shut-off.
Does Hotel & Home Innovation deliver nationwide?
Yes, we deliver to hotels and projects across Thailand. Order quantities and lead times depend on the project. Contact our team for a quotation.
