Wall-Mounted Hotel Makeup Mirrors: Lighted or Non-Lighted? A Buyer’s Guide With a 7-Point Checklist

Wall-Mounted Hotel Makeup Mirrors: Lighted or Non-Lighted? A Buyer’s Guide With a 7-Point Checklist

By: Hotel & Home Innovation Team, importer and distributor of hotel equipment, in business since 1999

The most common hotel makeup mirror is a 3X wall-mounted magnifying mirror on a folding extension arm. It shows most of the face and stays sharp at roughly 30 cm, a comfortable standing distance. Whether to choose a lighted or non-lighted model depends mainly on the bathroom’s existing lighting. If the main vanity lights cast shadows on the face, or the property is positioned upscale or above, choose an LED model with a CRI of 90 or higher. If the vanity area is already well lit and the budget per room is tight, a non-lighted mirror works well. Lighted models need their power point planned before the walls are tiled.

What is a 3X hotel makeup mirror, and why do most hotels choose 3X?

A 3X mirror is a concave mirror that makes the face appear about three times larger, and it is the most balanced level for a wide range of guests. It suits makeup, brows, shaving, contact lenses and skincare.

The reason 3X works in guest rooms is focal distance. The stronger the magnification, the closer the face must be for the image to stay sharp. A 3X mirror focuses at around 12 inches (about 30 cm), while 10X is better suited to a tabletop mirror the user can lean into than to a wall-mounted one (WellWhisk).

MagnificationApprox. working distanceField of viewBest fit
3XAbout 30 cm, comfortable when standingMost of the faceDefault for standard guest rooms and mixed guest profiles
5XCloser than 3XPart of the face, such as eyes or browsLuxury hotels, spa resorts, older guests with long-sightedness
10XVery close, guest must lean inVery narrowNot recommended for wall mounting in guest rooms

5X is popular for precision grooming because it shows brow hairs and pores clearly while keeping a wider view than 10X (Home to Sight). Properties that want both can choose a double-sided mirror, for example plain (1X) on one side and 3X or 5X on the other.

How do lighted and non-lighted makeup mirrors differ?

They differ in light on the face, installation cost and how early you must plan. A lighted mirror puts light directly on the face and reduces shadows from ceiling fixtures, but it needs wiring and a fixed position decided at the design stage. A non-lighted mirror is simpler to install, fixes straight to the wall, and has no electrical parts to maintain.

FactorLighted (LED makeup mirror)Non-lighted

MaintenanceLED and driver may need replacing over timeMirror surface and joints only

ImpressionPremiumSimple, minimal

A non-lighted mirror does not automatically mean a weaker guest experience. If the bathroom already has side lights or a backlit main mirror that lights the face evenly, a non-lighted magnifier performs well.

Which hotels should choose a lighted mirror? A decision table

Start with one question: where does the bathroom light come from? If the only light is a ceiling downlight, it falls from above and casts shadows under the eyes, nose and chin. That is where a lighted mirror helps most.

Project situationRecommendedWhy
Bathroom lit only by ceiling downlightsLightedSolves facial shadows directly
Upscale, luxury or spa resortLighted (possibly 3X/5X double-sided)Matches guest expectations at this tier
Side lights or backlit main mirror already installedNon-lightedLight is sufficient, no need to pay twice
Midscale or budget, many roomsNon-lightedControls cost per room, fast to install, easy upkeep
Renovation without retilingNon-lighted, or a lighted model that needs no concealed wiringAvoids demolition
Long-stay serviced apartmentLightedDaily use makes convenience count for more

Market conditions matter too. Bangkok has about 17,590 hotel rooms in the development pipeline, equal to roughly 16.7% of rooms already operating (Nation Thailand, 13 August 2026). JLL expects upscale hotels to make up 49% of new Bangkok rooms between mid-2026 and the end of 2030 (Real Estate Asia). As competition rises, the bathroom is where guests compare details immediately.

What specs matter for a lighted mirror?

Check four things: CRI, colour temperature, ingress protection and power supply. The first two decide whether guests see their skin tone and makeup accurately. The last two decide safety and installation cost.

1. CRI (Colour Rendering Index) measures how faithfully light shows colour compared with natural light, where sunlight scores 100. Premium manufacturer Robern specifies CRI 90+ for its lighted magnifying mirrors (Robern), and hotel mirror maker Electric Mirror shows that CRI 60 light distorts skin colour while CRI 90 looks natural (Electric Mirror). Recommended: CRI ≥ 90.

2. Colour temperature. Light around 5,000K is close to daylight and suits precise makeup work. Warmer light around 3,000K is easier on the eyes and fits a guest-room mood. Some premium models adjust from 3,000K to 5,000K (WS Bath Collections). If you can only pick one value, something between the two usually works best in a guest room.

3. Ingress protection (IP rating). Bathroom wiring rules based on IEC and BS 7671 define zones around baths and showers. The UK lighting industry recommends treating the area around a wash basin as zone 2, where fittings need at least IPX4 (Mr Resistor), and all bathroom circuits should be protected by a residual current device of no more than 30 mA (Victorian Plumbing). For projects in Thailand, the project’s electrical engineer should confirm requirements under the installation standard in use.

4. Power supply

Plug-inEasier to installVisible cable, socket needed nearbyPartial renovations

How do you choose a hotel makeup mirror? A 7-point checklist

Start with the mounting position and bathroom lighting, then choose the model. Purchasing teams, interior designers and project engineers can put these questions to any supplier.

#What to checkQuestion for the supplierWhy it matters
1Magnification“Is it 3X, 5X or double-sided 1X/3X?”3X suits most guests; 10X is unsuitable for wall mounting
2Light and CRI“Is it lighted? What CRI and colour temperature?”CRI ≥ 90 shows skin and makeup accurately
3IP rating and power“What IP rating? Hard-wired or plug-in?”It sits beside a basin where water splashes
4Material and finish“What is it made of, and which finishes are available?”Must handle humidity and match taps, shower and other hardware
5Arm and joints“How far does the arm extend? How do the joints move?”Guests should reach it without leaning against the wall, and joints must not droop over time
6Mirror size and wall plate“What diameter? How many fixing points?”The arm levers against the wall; drywall needs backing
7Supplier readiness“Can we reorder the same model? Are spare parts available? Do you deliver to site?”Hotels need one model throughout and replacements on hand

Positioning tip: mount the magnifier on the wall beside the basin so that, when extended, it sits at a standing guest’s face height, and leave enough room for it to fold flat without hitting the main mirror or a shelf.

A supplier’s view: why decide at the design stage

Most makeup-mirror problems in hotels are not about the mirror. They come from deciding too late. Once the bathroom is tiled, the options narrow immediately.

Working with hotel projects since 1999, our team always asks purchasing three questions:

  • Where does the bathroom light come from? The answer almost settles lighted versus non-lighted on its own.
  • Is the mounting wall masonry or drywall? Drywall needs backing ordered in advance.
  • Will one model be used across the whole property? A single model gives housekeeping and maintenance one standard and makes replacements simple.

For hotels in design or renovation, sending the mirror specification to the designer and electrical contractor before wall work starts is the cheapest approach.

Frequently asked questions

What magnification should a hotel makeup mirror have?

3X suits most guest rooms because it shows most of the face and works at about 30 cm. Luxury properties or those with many older guests may choose 5X or a double-sided 1X/5X mirror. 10X is not recommended for wall mounting.

Is a lighted makeup mirror worth it over a non-lighted one?

Yes, when the bathroom has only ceiling downlights or the property is positioned upscale or above. If side lights already illuminate the main mirror, a non-lighted magnifier gives a similar result for less.

How high should a makeup mirror be mounted?

There is no fixed figure. Measure from a standing guest’s face height at the basin, and make sure the arm can extend without hitting the main mirror or a shelf. For accessible rooms, choose a model with a long arm that tilts up and down.

Can a wall-mounted makeup mirror be fixed to drywall?

Yes, but add timber or plate backing behind the board first, because the extended arm levers against the fixings every time a guest pulls it out.

Does Hotel & Home Innovation deliver makeup mirrors nationwide?

Yes, we deliver to hotels and projects across Thailand. Order quantities and lead times depend on the project. Contact our team for a quotation.
